Stress is a part of everyday life and occurs in all areas of our lives, at home, at work and socially. We cannot eliminate stress from our lives but we can learn how to recognise it and cope with it more effectively. It is not a condition to be ignored or underestimated. So what exactly is stress? It is pressure we all experience. We all need a certain amount of stress to help us respond to the various challenges of everyday life. It can be a positive influence stimulating a person to rise above certain obstacles and enhance achievement. However it can also have negative effects when it is allowed to build up unchecked. So how can we best manage stress?

  • Discuss problems with friends and family - try not to bottle it up
  • Be realistic about what you can achieve in work, leisure or relationships
  • Know your strengths and weaknesses
  • Learn to accept failure and disappointment
  • Get enough sleep
  • Take time out for yourself
  • Eat a well balanced nutritious diet
  • High consumption of sugar, salt and alcohol may increase stress
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Relax and clear the mind with deep breathing & relaxation techniques
  • Take regular exercises
